Motorway workers stage 48 hour strike over pay and conditions
An eight hour strike by roadworkers at the main junction at Preston near Birmingham has continued until at least midnight yesterday.
There is no suggestion there will be an emergency general strike on the roads. However, the striking drivers are demanding the introduction of a fixed contract for road contractors – rather than the current "fixed" contract that pays workers according to a set number of fixed pay, bonus and other points, instead of a set number of hours worked.

The Local Government Association has called for an 8am opening of the works.
RMT union spokesman Mick Cash said: "The TUC are saying the industry has to change, even though the industry is not yet changed by the disruption to the working day, but for the government to insist on this is appalling.
"We've seen the TUC in this campaign saying we're calling for a general strike – we can't allow this to happen."
A spokesman for the Department for Transport said: "We understand that the public will like to see the full details of the proposed Fixed Contract and the Road Contract negotiations, but at this point we have not been given any details of what specific conditions the drivers will be working under.
"All government departments are involved in negotiations, so we will not comment further."
On Friday, the Department for Transport said it had "received" the drivers' demands for changes, but that its own timetable is that talks would begin early this week.
It urged all sides in the contract dispute to take steps to give full consent to those negotiations on time.
Wages in the past decade were higher in the RMT and Transport for London.
The RMT also warned that any concessions on pay, conditions and other rights offered by the Contractors and Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith was likely to be "a big hit" on the drivers.

'Russian President Vladimir Putin and foreign minister Sergey Lavrov are now ready to discuss issues related to Ukraine,' Lukashevich said.
'The only thing left now is to negotiate,' the Russian deputy foreign minister said, while speaking about the discussions on the Russian side.
'The Russian side has always been ready to cooperate on a number of issues. But now we are ready to continue a dialogue,' he added.
The US and EU, for their part, are ready to talk with Russia about the situation in Ukraine, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Lysenko told reporters on Sunday, but not until all the problems have been solved, saying that the talks were "the least important" thing left to talk about now.
